Brian McClure

Brian McClure is currently a Doctoral candidate (ABD) in the Department of History at the University of Memphis.  His interests are in African American education, and 20th-century United States history. McClure is also a Southern Regional Education Board Doctoral Scholar for the 2012-2013 academic year. McClure’s dissertation, “Educating the Atlantic: Foreign Students, Diaspora and Global Exchange at Tuskegee Institute, 1892-1935,” charts the development of race, culture and class of peoples of African and Asian descent as they traveled across the Atlantic to receive an education at Booker T. Washington’s Tuskegee Institute. It extends historical understanding of how African Americans impacted and were influenced by political, cultural and economic factors in the larger Atlantic world. McClure plans to use his manuscript, and future research to inform the academic community to the long history between HBCUs and the Diasporic community. He also aims to enlighten the broader public to past, present, and current issues surrounding HBCUs and minority serving institutions.
