CMSI Introduces New Report — New York: Minority Serving Institutions in the Empire State

New Brunswick, N.J., January 27, 2021— The Rutgers Center for Minority Serving Institutions is proud to announce the release of a new report, “New York: Minority Serving Institutions in the Empire State.” The report illustrates how Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) in New York plant seeds that grow into opportunities for student success.
This report provides an overview of the structure and politics of higher education within New York State. Within the state, the majority of MSIs are located in metropolitan areas, most of these institutions are Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), which mirrors the state’s substantial Latinx population. The report also provides information pertaining to affordability, upward social mobility, and the challenges that are associated with the MSIs in NY.
“As a faculty member in an MSI-eligible college in New York City, it was important to me to take a closer look at MSIs throughout the city and the state,” shared William Casey Boland, Senior Research Associate at the Rutgers Center for Minority Serving Institutions and Assistant Professor at Baruch College. “New York MSIs perform a pivotal role in educating all students and elevating them and the state overall. It’s vital that state leaders recognize the power of MSIs to advance local and state workforces and economies."
The state of New York demonstrates a commitment to ensuring that their residents have access to higher education tools and resources. The report shares insight on the steps state leaders can take to leverage the power of MSIs and elevate their students’ success. The report spotlights model MSI programs throughout the state such as CUNY ASAP, an exemplary college access and completion program, MSI success stories and highlights MSIs that have been efficient in advancing students due to their targeted individual student services and financial support.
“This report offers comprehensive analysis and data that are important to understanding the landscape of higher education within NY State,” shared Marybeth Gasman, Executive Director of the Rutgers Center for Minority Serving Institutions, and the Samuel DeWitt Proctor Endowed Chair. “Boland and his research team aimed to evaluate several measures of student success and highlight recommendations that can be used to enhance MSI institutional success.”
Recommendations suggest that MSIs consistently apply for federal grants, collaborate in forming ideas with other MSIs, continue to spread the word about the admirable work they are doing, advocate and support one another.
