Lakia M. Scott

Lakia M. Scott is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Baylor University. She received her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She is also a proud alumnus of two Historically Black Institutions: Texas Southern University (Bachelor of Arts in Communication, 2005) and Prairie View A&M University (Master of Education, 2009). Dr. Scott's current research interests include, but are not limited to: creating urban literacy initiatives to advance student academic outcomes, increasing multicultural awareness and perspectives in teacher education programs, and extending the discussion on the academic and cultural relevance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). She is considered an emerging scholar in the urban education field with numerous publications that span from research articles, book chapters, co-authored books, and a host of research, policy, and evaluation reports. She has nearly ten years of teaching experience from working in the K-12 and higher education settings. Additionally, Dr. Scott is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Promoting Achievement in Communities Everywhere (PACE), a non-profit organization located in Houston (Texas) that provides exposure and enrichment opportunities to traditionally marginalized youth via summer college tours and information sessions that center on college readiness and post-secondary goal attainment.
