The Rutgers Center for Minority Serving Institutions Introduces the John Smartt Summer Scholars Program!

New Brunswick, NJ (January 29, 2020)—The Rutgers Center for Minority Serving Institutions (CMSI) is proud to introduce the John Smartt Summer Scholars Program, an internship program that provides interested master’s students with the opportunity to gain professional experience, network with scholars in the field of higher education, and learn essential research skills related to equity and leadership in higher education.
The John Smartt Summers Scholars program is named in honor of CMSI longtime supporter and philanthropist, John Smartt, and seeks to recruit ambitious individuals who demonstrate an interest in learning more about Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) and those who exemplify self-determination. The internship, centered on the scholarship and programs of CMSI, will offer selected interns with practical research skills that will help them as they move forward in their careers.

Interns will work on-site in New Brunswick, NJ for six weeks alongside the Center’s professional and research staff and will have access to faculty mentoring and gain hands-on experience with research, including opportunities to develop and publish their scholarship.
“Within this six-week program, our goal is to contribute to students’ growth in ways that will strengthen their skill set, professionally and intellectually. We also want students to engage in critical inquiry regarding the current state of higher education,” says Marybeth Gasman, the Executive Director of the Rutgers Center of Minority Serving Institutions and a Distinguished Professor at Rutgers University.
In order to be eligible for consideration, the applicant must be a master’s student in any discipline and be seeking research and administrative experience. The applicant must also be available to work 19.5 hours a week on-site during the six-week duration of the internship. Additionally, the applicant should have an interest in conducting research on MSIs.
Interns will receive generous benefits including on-campus housing at Rutgers University-New Brunswick, a $1,500 stipend, the opportunity to produce and publish research, faculty mentoring, and the opportunity to gain administrative experience. Interns will also receive a special invitation to attend ELEVATE, our professional development program for early-career faculty from MSIs.
Selected interns will be responsible for covering their own transportation to New Brunswick, NJ, transportation during the duration of the program, and meals.
