The Second Issue of Pathways: A Journal of Humanistic and Social Inquiry is Now Available Online!

New Brunswick, NJ (January 15, 2020)— The Rutgers Center for Minority Serving Institutions is proud to announce the release of the second issue of Pathways: A Journal of Humanistic and Social Inquiry (Pathways), the peer-reviewed journal that highlights original scholarship from HSI Pathways Fellows in our HSI Pathways to the Professoriate program.
 
“Students work on their research throughout the program’s research-intensive summer seminar and get support fine-tuning their work throughout the Pathways process,” shared Marybeth Gasman, the Samuel DeWitt Proctor Endowed Chair, Distinguished Professor, and the Executive Director for the Rutgers Center for Minority Serving Institutions. “As a result, these articles are complex and data-driven syntheses that are built on foundational scholarly work. These articles are representative of the level of work these Fellows are expected to engage in throughout their tenure in the program.”
 
Pathways is a closed-submission journal that seeks to capture the distinctive voices and perspectives of Fellows in the HSI Pathways program. The journal’s peer-reviewed process, which includes feedback from several faculty reviewers that serve on the journal’s editorial board, spotlights scholarship traversing a number of disciplinary traditions, showcasing the breadth of scholarly interests amongst HSI Pathways Fellows. The comprehensive process provides each author with candid comments on their research and also offers Fellows the opportunity to gain formative experience articulating their theoretical positions, in preparation for their future contributions to their respective fields.
 
“Through the peer-reviewed process, Pathways offers Fellows the opportunity to demonstrate their academic strengths as they pursue their individual research projects,” shared Brandy Jones, the Center for Minority Serving Institutions Acting Director for Programs and Communications and Pathways Managing Editor. “We are always happy to offer new mediums for participants in our programs to communicate their intellectual ideas to a larger audience and for public consumption.”
 
Supported by a $5.1 million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, HSI Pathways to the Professoriate was created to increase the number of diverse faculty members in humanities. The program is coordinated by CMSI in partnership with three Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) — Florida International University; the University of Texas, El Paso; and California State University, Northridge — and five majority research institutions — New York University; University of California, Berkeley; University of Pennsylvania; Northwestern University; and University of California, Davis. Each year, HSI undergraduate students are selected to take part in an intensive summer research program, while also receiving mentoring, and support for applying to and enrolling in graduate school throughout the academic year. Throughout the five-year program, CMSI is also conducting assessments as to how selected students are navigating the HSI Pathways program and, once admitted, their graduate programs. CMSI aims to uncover the challenges and impetuses along the pathway to the Ph.D.
