The Third Issue of Pathways: A Journal of Humanistic and Social Inquiry is Now Available Online!

New Brunswick, N.J., February 18, 2021— The Rutgers Center for Minority Serving Institutions (CMSI) is proud to announce the release of the third issue of Pathways: A Journal of Humanistic and Social Inquiry (Pathways), a closed-submission, peer-reviewed journal that captures the distinctive voices and perspectives of Fellows in the HSI Pathways to the Professoriate program.
“HSI Pathways Fellows work extremely hard to formulate their research and ideas into one outstanding piece of work,” shared Marybeth Gasman, the Samuel DeWitt Proctor Endowed Chair, Distinguished Professor, and the Executive Director for the Rutgers Center for Minority Serving Institutions. “The Pathways journal is a prime example of the notable scholarly work that has been conducted during our HSI Pathways program, and evidence that the program has helped Fellows develop fundamental writing skills that are necessary for success within their academic disciplines.”
Pathways is a closed-submission journal that seeks to capture the distinctive voices and perspectives of Fellows in the HSI Pathways program. The journal’s peer-reviewed process includes feedback from faculty reviewers that serve on the journal’s editorial board. The journal spotlights scholarship traversing a number of disciplinary traditions and showcases the breadth of scholarly interests amongst HSI Pathways Fellows. The journal submission and review process provides each author with candid comments on their research and also offers Fellows the opportunity to gain formative experience articulating their theoretical positions, in preparation for their future contributions to their respective fields.
“This journal allows our fellows to do independent research along with the opportunity to receive professional feedback from reviewers with a range of expertise and experience,” shared Brandy Jones, the Rutgers Center for Minority Serving Institutions Director for Programs and Communications and Pathways Managing Editor. “We want to make sure that Fellows’ work is reviewed very carefully to ensure that it meets the criteria of effective research within the field of humanities.”
Supported by a $5.1 million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, HSI Pathways to the Professoriate was created to increase the number of diverse faculty members in humanities. The program is coordinated by CMSI in partnership with three Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) — Florida International University; the University of Texas, El Paso; and California State University, Northridge — and five majority research institutions — New York University; University of California, Berkeley; University of Pennsylvania; Northwestern University; and University of California, Davis.
Each year, HSI undergraduate students are selected to take part in an intensive summer research program, while also receiving mentoring, and support for applying to and enrolling in graduate school throughout the academic year. Throughout the five-year program, CMSI is also conducting assessments as to how selected students are navigating the HSI Pathways program and, once admitted, their graduate programs. CMSI aims to uncover the challenges and impetuses along the pathway to the Ph.D.
